Based on the Jeju folk labor song often known as the “Millstone Song,” this a choral work portrays the lives of women who earned their living by turning millstones, giving voice to their poverty and hardship through song.
The piece opens with the Jeju dialect refrain “Ieodo Georae,” unfolding in Korean-inspired melodic and rhythmic language to express the deep sorrow embedded in their lives.
Although the harmonies are contemporary, the original Jeju dialect text is preserved throughout, lending the work a strong folk character.
In the end, the opening refrain returns and fades away a cappella, leaving a quiet and haunting impression.
